Lakshadweep Islands are known for their exotic and sun-kissed beaches and lush green landscape. The name Lakshadweep in Malayalam and Sanskrit means ‘A Hundred Thousand Islands.”
India’s smallest Union Territory, Lakshadweep is an archipelago, consisting of 36 islands with an area of 32 sq. km. It is a uni-district, Union Territory and comprises of 12 atolls, three reefs, five submerged banks and ten inhabited islands. The capital is Kavaratti and it is also the principal town of the Union Territory. All the Islands are 220 to 440 km away from the coastal city of Kochi in Kerala, in the emerald Arabian Sea. The natural landscapes, the sandy beaches, abundance of flora and fauna and the absence of a rushed lifestyle enhance the mystique of Lakshadweep.
On 1 November 1956, during the reorganization of Indian states, the Lakshadweep islands were separated from Madras and organized into a separate union territory for administrative purposes. The new territory was called Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands before adopting the name Lakshadweep on 1 November 1973.
Besides the abundance of coconut palms, other trees include banyans, casuarinas, pandani (screw pines), breadfruits, tamarinds, and tropical almonds are also found here. Among the most notable marine fauna are sharks, bonitos, tunas, snappers, and flying fish besides the common octopus, turtles and crabs. The islands also are home to an array of water birds, such as herons, teals and gulls.
The islands of Lakshadweep are small, none exceeding 1 mile (1.6 km) in breadth, the Aminidivi are the northernmost islands of the group, and Minicoy Island is the southernmost island. Almost all the inhabited islands are coral atolls. Throughout the year, temperatures in Lakshadweep generally range from about 70 °F (about 20 °C) to nearly 90 °F (about 32 °C).
